Web users are becoming more aware of the information websites gather about them. To prevent websites from placing data on a user’s computer without their knowledge the European Union has recently introduced the
Privacy and Electronic Communications Directive: the 'Cookie Law'.
Websites use cookies (small text files) to gather information about users’ movements which helps to improve the site and the user experience. Cookies can also enable visitors to use the website more efficiently. The new directive stipulates that websites must ask users to consent before cookies are stored on their computer (an amnesty is in place until May 2012). At the moment, users are free to opt-out of cookies by applying plug-ins to their browsers. In future, however, users will have to opt-in to cookies.
